There are many different reasons why basements leak and get wet.  The main concept is that the water flows down hill and will always find the path of least resistance (in this case your basement)

When homes are first built a hole is dug for your foundation and your basement.  Footings are placed, the walls are built, and the floor is poured and put into place.  Before the soil is replaced around the outside of the basement walls and foundation, a drainage tile is put in around the footings and a type of water sealant material, amd/or a rubber type membrane is installed.  Then the loose soil is back filled aroudnt the basement.  Although this has been over simplified for writing, these processes occur, in theory to protect the house from water.  However, it is simply a pressure relief system, and over time, it is prone to clogging and failure.  Once it begins to clog and fail, water begins to look for a new direction or place to go.  It will find its way up through the floor cracks, but most of the time it begins to leak at the floor joint where the flor wall, and footing all come together.  Builders tend to spend more money on the appliances cabinets, flooring, etc than the drainage systems of the new home.

Earlier in the article we mentioned the water's movement down hill and down under the basement.  Let's go back to the soil we moved to build the foundation.  The soil that was disturbed and removed to place the basement in is now much looser, and permeable.  In other words, it is a dirt swimming pool.  As the water runds in ad fills the hole, it puts more pressure on the floor and joints.  We need to relieve the pressure, capture the water, and move it away from the foundation and home.  The goal is to keep the basement dry ALL of the time.
